NBC's 'Ortegas' Finds Its Center NBC has found a lead for its new comedy project "The Ortegas."
Comedian Al Madrigal will play a first-generation Mexican-American living in Los Angeles' San Fernando Valley with his multigenerational upper-middle-class Mexican family, according to The Hollywood Reporter. His character, Luis, hosts a talk show on a homemade set in the family's backyard. The series is based on a hit BBC2 comedy, "The Kumars at No. 42." NBC won a bidding war with FOX earlier this year to acquire the rights to the show. "Kumars" is about a large Indian family living in London. Family members often stop by during the backyard show to chat with the star guests. The interviews and interruptions are largely unscripted, unlike the sitcom portion of the show centering on the family.
The unscripted aspect of the show requires a lead with improvisational talent, according to producers. Madrigal, a stand-up comedian featured at this year's Just for Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal, is said to be well-suited to the task. His style has been compared to Garry Shandling and Ray Romano.
Madrigal's previous television appearances include NBC's "Late Friday" and Comedy Central's "Premium Blend." Related Shows
